The Sweatshirt Strikes Back

Is The T-Shirt making a comeback? We are always fond of the ideal mix of style and ease. The Sweatshirt is back and here to stay, the two key items in every man’s wardrobe are undoubtedly the fashionable T-Shirt and the resurgence of the sweatshirt. It's always a familiar sense of comfort, providing a natural fit that we love to wear around the house, to the gym and as a wardrobe staple for years on end.

Business Of Fashion online magazine featured an article claiming the modern sweatshirt has been reborn as a high fashion statement and can be easily accessed to all. It is a modern piece to that is comfortable yet diverse, it's not just a seasonal trend

A few facts about the sweatshirt, it was born in the 20's of the last century. Back then, sportsmen used to wear grey hued knitwear that kept them warm after their match was over.  Those early years were problematic in terms of laundry and the strenuous drying process altered its functionality. A small American company named 'Russel' came up with a solution as they started creating custom shirts following the concept of the owners' son, by creating cuts in cotton pieces and donning them as overalls for his football team.

The shirt, undoubtedly, was a huge success and became an international sensation amongst athletes and deemed synonymic with 'Sweat'. Years later another company named 'Champion' printed the words in bold letters and since then has become a huge hit, a key item in sports teams, schools and brands who followed suit with the idea.

Throughout the years the popular shirt started evolving mainly in the textile industry: laundry resistance and the small triangle in the neck point that meant to absorb the sweat. On the other hand, today this triangle has become a fashionable emblem.

The rest is history. With the end of the 60’s, it was transformed rudimentarily to one of the most fashionable sport items worn by the Ivy League players and students in various universities. This form of casual wear created a canvas for prints such as logos and other bold images.

Two Decades later, the golden years of the sweatshirt took place: Fashion brands like Gap decorated it with big logos, and men still donned these basics due to the high level of comfort. But the question still remains, why is the sweatshirt acclaimed with this kind of affection?  One of the assumptions is that prestigious high-end T- Shirts aren’t affordable for the general population, while the sweatshirt is.

Something about the simplicity always gets my attention, last month’s fashion weeks delivered the message that these classic items still have a spot in our wardrobe regardless of trends, they have turned into an important staple for years to come. Philip Lim’s collection stood out for its oversized Turquoise sweatshirts and the classic triangle symbol in the neck point was enlarged. Christopher Kane mastered the sweatshirt with prints that quickly became synonymous with the fashion of the future.
So what makes that simple cotton shirt the most popular girl in school? Sports VIP access to the world of fashion, the tag price of just 99.99 NIS and the fact it always looks great with a reliable pair of jeans. A word for the men, try to remember the last place you left your favorite sweatshirt and get it back, the sweatshirt fad is back.
